Deconstruct – Construct:  Rhythm in Cloth and Clay

Through December 31, 2021
The Merlin Lu Reading Room

Organizer: UChicago Yuen Campus in Hong Kong

Sep. 20

Reserve your spot to visit the University of Chicago Yuen Campus Reading Room and view two works by master artists in their respective fields.

Joseph Glasco (United States - 1925-1996)
Joseph Glasco was one of the youngest artists ever collected by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) New York in 1950.  He was also selected among top artists of the time for MOMA’s “Fifteen Americans” exhibit in 1952.

A protégé and friend of Jackson Pollack, Glasco began with Figurative painting and explored Surrealism, Cubism and Sculpture before reaching the peak of his own Abstract Expressionist voice.

A friend of Julian Schnabel, George Condo and many other American and European artists of the period, Joseph Glasco’s monumental four panel ‘Untitled #10’ from 1989 is on view.

Akiyama Yo (秋山阳) (Japan b. 1953)
Considered one of Japan’s most important contemporary artists, Akiyama Yo has spent his entire career investigating clay.  While many ceramic artists around the world use the potter’s wheel to create utilitarian works, Yo creates primordial works that appear to have come from beneath the earth’s surface or landed here from outer space.

Untitled MV-208 is an excellent example of Yo’s work that lends itself well to the UChicago Yuen Campus Reading Room.
