Yuen Speaker Series - The After-life of “Before Confucius”

Edward Shaughnessy published the book Before Confucius: Studies in the Creation of the Chinese Classics in 1997, with eight individual studies on the early history of China's Classic of Changes 易經, Classic of Documents 尚書, and Classic of Poetry 詩經. A Chinese translation of this book was published in Taiwan in 2013, but was not readily available in mainland China. A new edition has just been published in Shanghai (by Zhong-Xi shuju 中西書局).

In this lecture, Professor Shaughnessy will look back upon the writing of this book, some of the problems involved in translating it, and consider the continuing significance of some of its conclusions.
