The University of Chicago is launching a summer internship program in Asia for undergraduate students funded by University Trustee Francis Tin Fan Yuen, AB’75, and his wife, Rose Wai Mun Yuen. The Yuen Metcalf Internship Program will provide students in the University’s College with career opportunities and cross-cultural experiences focused in Hong Kong and Greater China.
Yesterday, the University welcomed the Yuen Metcalf interns to a networking reception at The Hong Kong Jockey Club University of Chicago Academic Complex | The University of Chicago Francis and Rose Yuen Campus in Hong Kong. More than 100 college students will soon embark on their journey in the region for their summer internship placement.
”Rose and I are proud to be a part of the University’s commitment to making a positive academic and social impact in Hong Kong and Asia,” said Francis Yuen, the University of Chicago Trustee, AB’75. “The Yuen Metcalf Internship Program will support the University’s career advancement efforts by expanding students’ exposure to Asia. We look forward to seeing the program help students translate their academic foundation into professional success in the region.”
Prioritizing internships in Greater China and particularly the Greater Bay Area, the Yuen Metcalf Internship Program will allocate 100 out of the 113 internships to take place in the region, including 41 in Hong Kong. The gift will support opportunities at a variety of professional firms and start-ups as well as organizations where internships are typically unpaid such as museums, non-profits, and research and educational institutions.
Notable employer partners include: the University of Hong Kong, China-United States Exchange Foundation, Hong Kong International Literary Festival and Lynk in Hong Kong, as well as Laotu, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences – Cancer Institute & Hospital, and Red Gate Gallery in China.
“Our career programs help students connect the rigorous and transformative education they have at the College with the professional world. This generous gift from the Yuens will provide support for those looking for industry-specific training, networking connections and career opportunities in Asia, and will benefit students for years to come. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and philanthropy.” said John W. Boyer, Dean of the University of Chicago’s College.
The Jeff Metcalf Internship Program is the flagship internship program for the University of Chicago undergraduate students, with over 2,800 Metcalf internships this year. This summer, a total of 230 students will crisscross Asia, of which 113 are supported by the Yuens’ gift, compared to 149 last academic year. The 54% increase in Asia opportunities further demonstrates the University’s commitment to fostering intellectual exchange and collaboration in the region.
In addition to funded internship opportunities, the Yuens’ gift will support other programs and engagement with Hong Kong and Greater China, including two upcoming recruitment forums with Hong Kong and Asian investment banking firms and Shenzhen-based product and technology companies, to facilitate students finding professional avenues in the Greater Bay Area.
